Tub size is one of the first packaging decisions a supplement brand makes, and one of the easiest to get wrong. Too big and the product looks half empty when the customer opens it. Too small and you're fighting for label space and redesigning in six months.
Start with what goes inside
Capsules and powders fill tubs very differently. As a rule of thumb for our HDPE tubs:
| Size | Diameter | Typical fill |
|---|---|---|
| 8 oz | 60 mm | Up to about 120 capsules |
| 10 oz | 60 mm | Up to about 150 capsules |
| 20 oz | 89 mm | Up to about 300 capsules, or about 300 g of powder |
| 25 oz | 89 mm | About 500 g of powder |
| 55 oz | 120 mm | About 750 g of powder |
Powder density varies a lot. A fluffy greens blend takes far more room than creatine, so always fill-test with your actual formula before you lock in a size.
Leave room for the scoop
If your product ships with a scoop, it needs to sit on top of the powder without being buried, and the customer needs to reach it without digging. Plan for headspace above the fill line, and test with the scoop you will actually use.
Think about the label, not just the tub
A taller tub gives you more label height for your Supplement Facts panel, claims and branding. Our 25 oz takes a label up to 4.75 in tall. If your label is crowded at the size you picked, that's a sign to go up a size or simplify the design.
Keep the whole line consistent
Most brands grow from one product to several. Choosing sizes that share the same design language, with matching bezels, chamfers and finishes, makes a shelf of different products still look like one brand. It also lets you reuse lids across sizes that share a neck diameter (60 mm or 89 mm).
Check shipping and the shelf
- Will the size fit the retail shelf or subscription box you're targeting?
- How many units fit in a case, and does that case ship efficiently?
- Does your co-manufacturer's filling line already run this size?
See it before you order
The fastest way to decide is to look at the sizes side by side in your color. Our 3D tub designer lets you switch between all five sizes, apply any Pantone color and preview your logo on the lid.
