Lenticular and Micro-Optic Labels: Flip, 3D and Motion Effects

Nothing on a lenticular label moves. The angle and the light do all the work, and that is exactly why shoppers stop to look.

Pick up a lenticular label and turn it: one image becomes another, a logo floats above the background, or a pattern seems to move. Nothing on the label actually moves. It’s all optics.

How lenticular printing works

The label is covered with a sheet of tiny parallel lenses. Under the lenses, two or more images are printed in thin, interlaced strips. From each angle, the lenses show only one set of strips, so as the label turns, your eye sees a different image.

Micro-optic films work on a similar idea at a much smaller scale. Arrays of microscopic lenses sit over microscopic images, which makes floating images that move against the direction you tilt.

The effects

  • Flip: one image changes into another, for example your logo into your product name.
  • Morph: an image changes step by step through several frames.
  • 3D depth: a logo or number floats above a background that slides underneath it.
  • Motion: patterns ripple and run as the label tilts.
  • Zoom: a shape grows or shrinks.
  • Color change: artwork shifts color with the angle.

Why brands use them

On a crowded shelf, movement draws the eye, and a label that changes as the shopper turns the pack invites them to pick it up. Because the effect depends on precise lens and print alignment, these labels are also hard to copy. A photo or a photocopy shows only one frame.

Where they fit

  • Neck bands, seals and tip-ons on premium products
  • Limited editions and launches
  • Authentication labels that shoppers can check by tilting

Start small

You don’t need to redesign your whole pack. Try a lenticular seal or band on one product first, then roll it out if it works. Tilt the live examples on our security features page to see each effect.
